Playing The Blinds

Playing the blinds in Holdem Poker

The blinds are present in Holdem Poker in order to stimulate the action and get a little bit of money in the pot to start things off.

Naturally weak

The blinds are in an unfortunate position because they have to put money in the pot before they even see their cards. Therefore, they are betting blind.

Because they have committed to putting money in the pot, many people do their utmost to defend their blinds and try to hold on to their money. But remember, you are going to have the disadvantage of having to act first each round and defending your blind with weak cards is a recipe for losing money.

A cost of doing business

In fact, you are often going to see the dealer raise the pot to put pressure on the blinds to fold. Because he is acting last, the dealer will be able to use his position to win the pot and will have the blinds at a disadvantage in every round.

Therefore, learn to see the blinds as simply a cost of doing business in poker. They must be paid when it is your turn, but you will have seen several hands before it is your turn to pay up. So dont get attached to your blind bet. If you dont have the strength to defend it, let it go and save your money for a better spot.
